Bouclé or bouclette wool? Please don’t squabble. They both refer to the same thing! And the popularity of this iconic fabric is apparent—it’s everywhere!
There’s still more to come from bouclé wool! Its popularity has risen sharply in recent years. Type in the keywords “Scandinavian style” or “Mid-Century Modern,” and you’ll discover a profusion of dark wood furniture upholstered in the distinctive pilled fabric. Bouclé can be found on sofas, poufs and chairs, as well as adding extra softness to cushions and throws.
But why does this trend verge on obsession? Our ever-increasing need to make our home a cozy, comfortable sanctuary may explain it. Bouclé is not only pleasant to touch; it also gives off a soothing feel.
Recurrent trend
Bouclé wool had its first moments of glory in the 50s, thanks to the French furniture designer Jean Royère. At that time, the upholstering was made of natural wool woven in an irregular pattern, creating textured curls. Often ivory in colour, it contrasted beautifully with the dark wood furniture typical of Scandinavian and Mid-Century Modern décor.
Polyester imitations soon made their way onto the market. The curved furniture design trend of the 70s introduced bouclé to complement the rounded shapes of armchairs. Nowadays, people who still love this retro decade can scour antique shops or online to get their hands on original items... or visit boutiques that sell reproductions.
Soft spot
Not as rough or prickly as tweed, bouclé makes furniture cozy and comfortable. An armchair upholstered with bouclette fabric makes you want to sink in, relax, and snuggle up with irresistibly soft cushions of the same material.
Creamy white bouclé is the ultimate classic and a sure bet for any decorating style. Other neutrals (including grey and black) are also popular. Choosing colours such as powder pink, sapphire blue, or dark green adds a new twist to the trend and takes you outside the box.
