Want your space to feel like new? Whether you’re planning a big change or a subtle refresh, there’s something here to tickle your fancy. Check out these 2023 home décor trends primed to add oomph to your style.

1. Viva Magenta, Pantone colour of the year 2023

The Pantone Color Institute, the world’s leading colour authority, named Viva Magenta the hue of the year 2023. This nomination is echoing across many spheres in the art of living. Over the next months, living room walls, armchairs, dishes, bedding, and everything else, will be transformed by this vibrant pink and red pigment... but just until the colour wheel turns again.

2. Cozy bouclé

What would Scandinavian style be without bouclé? The wool’s irregular weave, which gives its fuzzy texture, has found its way back into an array of Nordic furniture and accessory designs. Frequently offered in ivory white, this natural element creates incredible softness in sofas, chairs, and cushions. It's a comforting style and popular trend that is still very much in vogue this year.

3. Playful 80s

The Memphis style, emblematic of the 80s, is back to brighten your home. No, we’re not talking about flashy chandeliers and marble entrance halls like at Graceland, where Elvis lived. Memphis is a group founded by Ettore Sottsass, which included Italian designers and architects. Their brilliant creations inspire to this day: vibrant colours, playful graphic prints, and sculptural furniture, all set in an atmosphere of uninhibited humour. It’s as thrilling as opening a box of chocolates!

4. Segmented spaces

Is the pendulum swinging back? Open areas are giving way to more segmented spaces. Remote working has undoubtedly contributed to this quest for privacy. It’s hard to concentrate in a workspace in the corner of your living room that doubles as a playroom. Luckily you won’t need to put up walls to divide the space in a room. Clever dividers, such as a glass partition, an open bookcase, a claustra wall, or a vertical garden, can create defined spaces and even become a focal point in the décor.

5. Artsy wall coverings

Video conferencing has become a big part of our lives and has motivated us to consider the white wall behind us, which may need some love. There are countless ways to bring this blank canvas to life: photos, silkscreens, a uniquely shaped mirror, and woven or macramé pieces that add a trendy “handmade” touch. So, gather up your step ladder, hammer, and creative spirit!

6. Curvy shapes

Rounded furniture is all the rage! Sofas with curved edges, sinuous lines, and circular backs are perfect for lounging on. Poufs and ottomans—soft, round cushioned seats—placed flat on the floor will surely be pleasing to the family cat! Coffee tables also embrace organic shapes, and mirrors exchange sharp angles for curvaceous contours.

7. Japandi style

An exciting convergence has taken place in the decorating world: a coming together of Scandinavia and Japan. Yes, indeed! Cultures that seem very distinct from each other are united by their shared Zen approach to the art of living.

The design trend is called Japandi (a neologism that merges Japan and Scandinavia). The well-known Scandinavian style is re-imagined with Asian elements and natural materials: bamboo, shoji screen-like partitions, and decorative objects such as stone or wooden vases, which will develop a patina over time. This philosophy of finding beauty in imperfection is called wabi-sabi, a term you can add to your next decorating discussion.

8. Coloured, textured glass

What stirs the heart more than a beautiful piece of glass? Gracing the table in 2023 is monochromatic drinkware and plates that borrow from shades of a rainbow or feature pretty speckles with random patterns (think Murano glass). The delicate material serenely reveals glorious shades, and a vintage collection of coloured bottles can create a stunning visual impact. The glass also plays on tactile sensations with grooves, ridges, or a hammered effect. A nice change from a plain translucent tumbler.

9. Globe lighting

Light fixtures with clear or frosted glass globes are always fun. Their designs continue to fascinate. At times they resemble molecular structures, and at others, planets that are floating through space. A single globe table lamp is reminiscent of a fortune teller’s crystal ball. Giant pearls or dangling bubbles? It’s in the eyes of the beholder. Regardless, these beautiful objects add sparkle to our lives.

10. Elegant travertine

Travertine is a superstar limestone! It was used to build the Roman Colosseum and St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. Proud of its glorious history, it enjoyed a resurgence in popularity in the 70s. Today, it unites with wood and bouclé to form a successful trio of natural materials. What makes it so appealing? Its porous grain, veining, and irregular cavities. And it’s very resistant. Travertine is a versatile material used to create tables, wash basins, lamp bases, and floor tiles. Options are endless for incorporating this décor trend in your home.
