The outdoor deck is where sun-filled days often turn into nights to remember. Each detail helps create a unique atmosphere in your image. Take this opportunity to let your imagination run wild. We’ve got inspiring ideas to make your space a haven of calm where you’ll want to spend every waking moment.

So many lawn furniture options

Take the time to find just the right lawn furniture that meets your needs and reflects your personal taste. It all depends on how you envision spending time on your deck. Do you want an eating area, party hotspot or relaxation zone? You can mix and match furniture to create the optimal outdoor experience!

Tables

The table becomes the cornerstone of an outdoor eating area. We suggest you consider furniture made with sustainable, weather-resistant materials: treated wood, metal or UV-resistant plastic. Make sure there’s enough room around the table to seat all your guests. The table should also properly fit into the space you have to keep clutter at bay.

Have you considered building a full outdoor kitchen, work surface and sink included? What a great way to spend time outside while getting your favourite summer foods ready.

Comfortable chairs and armchairs

Shelling out for quality chairs and armchairs will create an inviting relaxation zone on your deck. Soft cushions and breathable materials (like linen or cotton) are your go-to in your quest for ultimate comfort. Stackable chairs would be a great idea to add more space when needed.

Modular lounges

Consider modular furniture to customize your exterior layout. Adjustable sofa collections will give you the freedom to switch up the layout to suit your event and preferences. They are designed to blend easily with a variety of environments.

Umbrellas and awnings

A top priority should be to install umbrellas or retractable awnings to protect from the sun’s harsh rays and create much-needed shade zones. Durable materials are called for here, such as acrylic canvas (also known as sunbrella), aluminum or stainless steel.

In an ideal world, your chosen designs (styles, colours and patterns) should match with the rest of the lawn furniture and home exterior. It’s always nice when you create some aesthetic flow.

Sun loungers and hammocks

Don’t forget to squeeze in a few tanning sessions. Sun loungers are always a welcome and comfortable addition to enjoy some relaxation under the sun or even an afternoon nap. Your best bet is to pick an adjustable model that holds up well in various weather conditions.

Why not strategically set up a hammock or two and some swings? An outdoor hot tub would be the ultimate finishing touch to your backyard oasis.

Floor coverings

There is no shortage of floor coverings available on the market but which one is right for your deck? To help you make an informed choice that will stand the test of time, we suggest you consider among the following:

Composite covering

High quality composite coverings are all the rage. Resistant to stains, discolouration, mould and available in a variety of finishes and textures to boot. One choice would be composite deck boards: they offer the same warm look as a traditional wood species but are so much easier to maintain.

Paving stones (natural or reconstituted)

Natural paving stones are an interesting option to consider as they’re long-lasting and easy to maintain. Choose from among granite, limestone or sandstone in whatever texture you prefer. Elegant and sturdy all rolled into one!

If you like this idea but are looking for a more economical option, think about reconstituted stone. It’s easier and less expensive to install.

Stamped concrete

Interested in a cheaper solution to cover your outdoor deck? Introducing… drum roll… stamped concrete. Fresh concrete slabs are stamped and their pigmented surface can mimic the appearance of wood, stone, brick and even slate.

Porcelain tiles

Porcelain tile holds up admirably against the endless freeze-thaw cycle in our northern climate. It’s even better adapted to our changing climate than ceramic! We highly recommend this floor covering. It’s stain-resistant, scratch-resistant, easy to clean… and oh so chic!

Tips for changing your deck floor covering

Outdoor deck lighting ideas

Lighting has its own important role to play. It sets the scene for balmy evenings spent with your favourite people, when planning al fresco meals, gathering around an outdoor fireplace or simply enjoying the night air after dusk. We have some outdoor lighting choices to brighten up your deck and create the mood you seek.

Recessed lights

Recessed lighting is ideal to subtly illuminate surfaces and its discrete placement can highlight various areas on a deck. It can also be installed in the floor, on stairs or walls and even twinned with small lamps for additional lighting in a specific area.

Wall lights

Wall lighting can effectively illuminate defined areas. Whether brightening up a chill lounge area, spotlighting decorative items or lighting up entrances, it diffuses directional and functional light. It also adds a touch of sophistication to any outdoor space. Browse the vast range of models available on the market and pick whatever tickles your fancy.

Solar lights

Solar lamps are in your future if you want practical lighting that’s easy to install and that doesn’t break the bank. It spends all day using the sun’s rays to charge and then automatically lights up at dusk. Spread them around the deck or down a walkway, if you have this on your property.

Hanging lamps

Hanging lamps add charm to any deck and provide soft and diffused lighting, like rice paper lampshades (Japanese lantern effect). It’s a great way to light up gathering spots (above a table or lounge area, for example). A great option to create an intimate atmosphere under a wooden pergola or other covered space.

Floor lamps

Any big spaces to light up? Floor lamps could be the way to go as they provide powerful illumination. Place them strategically to effectively light up darker deck corners (or a pathway) where stronger light is needed.

Decorative items and accessories

Last but not least, you should include some finishing touches to liven up your deck, balcony or patio. We have some fantastic ideas to share.

Plants

Flowers add joyous bursts of colour to your surroundings but what would be the right fit for your deck? Pick varieties that can withstand cold and the occasional heatwave. Geraniums, succulents and pansies are some excellent choices.

Vases or boxes would work here so let your search begin in local boutiques and decorate your space with pretty finds. Looking to shelter your deck from prying eyes? Create a vegetation wall around your deck and enjoy all the natural privacy in the world.

String lights

Create a zone that glows like fireflies by putting up string lights. Choose low-energy LED lighting to hang over your zen corner or twist along a railing.

Fountain or waterfall

A fountain or waterfall can easily become the focal point of your deck and will harmonize perfectly with your already inviting space. The sound of gently trickling water soothes the mind and could be the finishing touch your deck needs.
