Being organized can help reduce stress and apprehension about moving. Discover our tips to make each step in the process easier, from preparation to the big day.
Start getting ready around 2 months before your move
It's a good idea to start getting ready around two months before the big move. You can do some tasks before, like choosing a moving company. Plan ahead to save successfully.
If you're moving during the busy season, contact the company three months ahead of time. The cheapest option is always to call some of your most helpful friends!
Take the day of your move off from work for peace of mind. Some employers will even give you the day off to move. Then start collecting empty boxes. You can see if your friends and family have any, or you can ask around at big box stores (they often have some in stock).
Go through all your belongings and give away or sell what you don't want anymore, so you won't have to pack anything unnecessary. This will break up your move into smaller chunks and help you get prepared mentally. It can even help your pet to get ready—change can be hard on cats and dogs! If you can, get someone to look after them on moving day.
One month before your move, change your address. You can do this ahead of time on the Government of Canada and Government of Quebec websites.
Start packing efficiently around 2 months before
Packing boxes can take some time. Once again, it's better to act sooner than later. Give yourself around two months and use our tips to simplify the task:
Leave your clothes in their drawers and protect them with plastic wrap.
Leave your clothes on hangers and pack them in bags or closet boxes.
Use towels and dishcloths to protect your fragile items like glassware and dishes.
Label each box on the side with the room in the house where it should be placed.
Sort small items you don't want to lose (like screws for a piece of furniture) in clearly identified bags.
Spread out books and heavy objects in multiple boxes.
Use blankets to protect your furniture and secure them with elastics. It's a lot better for the environment than plastic covers!
Pack a personal bag with your computer, a change of clothes and a bag of toiletries. That way you'll be able to find them at the end of moving day. Along the same lines, it's a good idea to have a survival box for the first few days. Pack the essentials: utensils, dishes, tools and other toiletry items.
Check items off your last-minute list around 7 days before
You can't check certain things off your list until a few days before moving day. Here's a recap:
If you can, clean your future apartment or house before you move in. Also make sure that all your furniture will fit and that all the dimensions are correct. Take things apart if you have to.
Leave your old place in good condition. Hire a residential house cleaning company if you don't have time.
Take photos of all the electrical hookups that could cause problems. You'll be happy to have the photos when it comes time to reinstall everything.
Unplug and clean your fridge 24 hours before the big day.
Make sure you have a cooler box and food for you and your team. Refreshments are always welcome!
Delegate tasks to everyone who will be helping you. Figure out who will be in charge of what: moving big pieces of furniture, making lunch, driving between point A and point B and stopping at the recycling centre to drop off certain items.
Loading and unloading on moving day
It's the big day! You've got the keys. Time to move some boxes and get your workout in! Put heavy items at the back of the truck and use soft cushioning to protect the most fragile items (like artwork and mirrors).
EspaceProprio tip Don't forget to use moving straps and a dolly if you're not working with an experienced mover. And one last thing—don't forget to breathe!
Save the Housewarming party playlist to your Spotify or Apple Music library and play it during the move.
