Homeowners should inspect their attics at least once a year. You can access your attic via the roof or through a hatch in the ceiling. Be sure to put on clothes you don’t mind getting dirty!
Time required: 4 hours
Difficulty level: High
1. Make sure you have the recommended equipment before entering your attic: a ladder, gloves, closed-toe shoes, appropriate clothing, a vacuum cleaner, and a hygrometer.
2. Set up your ladder and climb into the attic.
3. Check the condition of the insulation.
4. Look for signs of animals or insects. Call a pest control company if needed.
5. Check the humidity level with a hygrometer. A level between 45% and 60% is ideal.
6. Check for signs of mold.
7. Clean the air intakes and outlets, making sure they are still functional.
