Peel-and-stick (or self-adhesive) wallpaper is easy to install — and to remove! Learn how to choose a wallpaper and install it to add flair to any room. It’s an easy way to spruce up a variety of neglected areas.
Decide where to install it
Take a little time to visualize how wallpaper could refresh the spaces in your home. Use it for an accent wall, a door, bedroom walls, the kitchen backsplash or even a shelf, a table or drawers. You can use the services of an interior designer or trust your own artistic eye. Don’t worry about the installation technique: all you need is a little care and you’ll do great! Fanie Giguère, owner and managing director of Meraki, explains:
“The strips can be repositioned as needed during installation. They are easy to install without any glue or water. And they won’t stain your furniture or the floor like paint could.”

EspaceProprio Tip A mood board is a helpful tool that lets you visualize how a room will look before you start making changes. Find wallpaper patterns you like and create a mood board using applications like Mural, Studiobinder or Gomoodboard.
Be sure to select the type of wallpaper that will best suit the surface you will be installing it on. It’s important to check the manufacturer’s instructions. Some products can be installed behind a sink while others should not, because of the humidity. For example, it’s advisable to use vinyl wallpaper for the kitchen, especially if you install it on your island or countertops. It’s easier to clean, waterproof and resistant to fats such as oil and butter.
Find your preferred style
There are many types of adhesive decor available: tapestry wallpaper, cut-outs, decals, removable tiles, frosted films, etc. These products are generally less expensive than paint and come in a variety of styles, so you’re sure to find something that’s right for you.
“Original designs will make any room look great, whether installed on a single wall or several,” says Fanie Giguère. At Meraki, the designs are created by local artists and designers who are always on the lookout for the latest trends. “It's a great way to support local talent!”

Apply properly
Follow the steps below to install the wallpaper properly. Are you more visual? Check out this YouTube video shot by The Home Depot. Some companies also have an “Installation” tab on their site.
Remove any nails and plug any holes in the wall.
If you painted the wall recently, be sure it has been dry at least 14 days before installing the wallpaper.
Smooth the surface on which you want to affix the wallpaper. You will need to sand your countertop or wall if the surface is rough.
Clean the surface with a dry cloth.
Use a tape measure to calculate the area to cover.
Without removing the backing just yet, hold the strip of paper where you want to install it and make a small mark with a pencil.
Leave the mark visible so you don’t run out of wallpaper.
Make sure the patterns on the different pieces are aligned and sufficiently close together. Use a level to check that the strips are straight.
Flatten the strip with a plastic wallpaper smoother. This will remove any bubbles and folds. Repeat steps 6–9 until the surface is completely covered.
Remove any excess paper with a utility knife.
