Would you like to use spray paint for your next DIY project? Head outside and look at the product label and safety information sheet. Beware of the presence of isocyanates, which are chemical substances added to the mixture. They can irritate the respiratory tract, eyes and skin.

Aerosol paint, also known as "spray paint", is usually oil-based. Still, water-based spray paints are also available and are just as effective. Their application, maintenance and, especially, the concentration of chemical compounds are very different. This is what you need to pay special attention to.

  1. Take the time to check the ingredients on the product label. If possible, buy water-based paint.

  2. Use a pair of gloves and a mask to protect you from harmful organic dust and fumes.

  3. Choose old clothes you no longer wear because when you have finished the project, you may resemble a work of art!

  4. Apply the product outside, especially if you’ve chosen an oil-based paint.

  5. Allow to dry, and then admire the final result.

Protecting your health and the environment is possible, even when painting! Remember that your aerosol paint cans can be recycled at designated drop-off centres.

According to the Government of Quebec (in French only) (2023), "the Société québécoise de gestion écologique de la peinture (Éco-Peinture) is the management organization recognized by RECYC-QUÉBEC to implement and operate the recovery and recycling program for this category".
